When water freezes in the pipes, it expand and results into bursting of water thus allowing water to escape and creating a lot of damage. Hence pipes need to be adequately protected from water freezing and other blockage along the entire length.

Being aware of the fact, "prevention is better than cure", people should take preventive measures so as eliminate the frozen pipe disaster. The most basic step to be taken in this regard is to insulate all water pipes from cold moving air.

You can also wrap heater tapes around the pipes. These basically consists of a built in thermostat that helps keeping the pipes dry. Even you can install a heat reflector lamp for this.

Don't try to thaw a frozen pipe using an open flame. This can lead to pipe deterioration and can even ablaze the building on fire.

The best way to thaw the frozen pipe is to use radiant heat. For that you can either use a hand- held blow dryers or a radiant space heater. Frozen pipes could easily be fixed using these devices. You just need to set the device at the highest temperature and direct it towards the effected area. This will safely fix the frozen pipes until these are not burst out. Moreover, check for further freezing of the pipes.

Hire a plumber if the problem continues. And if your home posses metal pipes, then these could be fixed by a rented welder on the frozen side.

No doubt, relocating the water pipes to the places where access of heat is easy, is an ad hoc. Besides, the cost indulged in calling in the plumber would increase, but this will resolve the issue.
